From the age of 18 I developed severe generalized anxiety disorder with paralyzing panic attacks. With no desire to take the drugs offered to me by psychiatrists I had to develop new behaviors in order to move forward with my life. I didn’t achieve this by making excuses, I slowly and sometimes painfully progressed because I had a deep desire to change, to overcome the anxiety and pain.
For years I tried everything imaginable and finally developed a program of spiritual meditation and daily exercise along with living in a flow of gratefulness to help me achieve professional and personal success. I am a marketing and PR professional with clients from around the world, the mother of four beautiful daughters and happily married to my very best friend. We are blessed with a beautiful life and appreciate everything that comes our way each day, including the obstacles and challenges that life brings on.
Obstacles are Opportunities
There is no getting around obstacles, they are everywhere. For many of us the disruption brought on by technology has been an obstacle and an opportunity for our career growth. Real estate agents challenged by websites like Zillow; Marketers and PR professionals forced to learn new social media tools like Instagram and Pinterest; Uber and Lyft changing the transportation industry, EverBank and LearnVest forever transforming the world of finance. Keeping up with technology can be perceived as a hindrance or a wonderful opportunity to move more efficiently in our life and careers.
Whatever the barrier is that you are facing, it offers both hurdles to jump and prospects for a better solution and outcome. You see, barriers are not the problem, it is the way in which we respond to them that holds us back.
Sometimes it’s easier to use an obstacle (a perceived barrier) as an excuse for not moving forward because we fear failure or embarrassment if we don’t succeed. There is fear and then there is being paralyzed by fear. This is the point in which we come up with excuses.
- If I only had the time to learn a new skill,
- If I could meet the right people,
- If I could save some money,
- If times were better,
- If I had more talent,
- If I were only younger. . .
One must begin by changing their mind about how they perceive barriers. Start with a deep self-assessment to understand what limiting beliefs you have sold yourself. If they are getting in the way of your goals, then create a list of the knowledge skills and talent you will need to breakthrough and a plan to learn them.
It is also very important to remember that we are never alone, especially when facing obstacles. When connected to our higher power, a source of infinite generosity and benevolence, we realize that we are co-creating this gift of life that has been given to us. Our greatest breakthrough begins by being grateful.
